Albania vs. Serbia

These two countries share the same Balkan culture and are neighbors. But they are fierce enemies. Why?

These two countries share the same Balkan culture and are neighbors. But they are fierce enemies. Why?

The first reason is history. In 1912, Serbia attacked Albanian-populated regions of the Ottoman Empire. Once they did, they massacred the people to ‘cleanse’ the area. This event is still scarred by the brutal face of history.

The second reason is territory. In 2008, the Albanian-majority region of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. Albania is supporting the separatists, and this has created even more political discord than before.

Will tensions eventually subside? Will Serbia grant Kosovo its independence? Will Albania give up fighting? Only time will tell.
