Today, we start off with some crazy news from scientists in Peru. They have just uncovered the bones of a new animal that could be the heaviest ever, which they have named Perucetus colossus. The blue whale has long held the title, growing to be up to 100 feet (30.5 meters) long and weigh over 200 tons, but this new discovery could top that. The whale lived about 39 million years ago, according to a paleontologist, and was about 66 feet (20 meters) long, making it shorter than the blue whale. It weighed much more, though- the whale could weigh up to 374 tons! In fact, each vertebra on its backbone weighs over 220 pounds (100 kilograms), and its ribs are approximately 5 feet (1.4 meters) long. The bones are also extremely dense, which suggests that it was a bottom-feeder similar to today's manatees. However, the head is missing from the skeleton, which would have given us the crucial information as to what the animal eats. The scientific community is thrilled at this major discovery and will be looking forward to what else the researchers learn about the colossal whale.
On another note, 18 people are dead after a bus tumbled down a steep hillside in Mexico, and about 20 others have been hospitalized. The bus was en route to the US-Mexico border city of Tijuana when the bus flew off the road and into a ravine, which is estimated to be about 40 meters (131 feet) deep. This made rescue extremely complicated, but officials managed to pull it off safely. The bus was carrying 42 passengers from various countries, such as India, Dominican Republic, and multiple African nations. The bus driver has been detained, as he is suspected to have been speeding at the time of the crash. Officials think that he sped around a corner and lost control of the bus, sending it into the ravine. A thorough investigation is still underway, though.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Incarcerate- To incarcerate someone is to put them in prison or, figuratively, to subject them to confinement, as in “people incarcerated in their obsessions.”
