Grubhub recently made a deal with Amazon to have Amazon Prime customers receive Grubhub+ free for one year, and Amazon gets a 2% stake in Grubhub's parent company, Just Eat Takeaways with the option of increasing that stake to 15% in the future.
The offer is that Amazon Prime members get Grubhub+ for free for one year. Grubhub+ includes free delivery on any order that is over $12, and also offers member-only offers, and Prime members will be saving $120 a month. After the yearly offer expires, Prime customers will automatically be charged the regular $9.99 a month.
There are over 153 million Amazon Prime customers around the world, so this will massively increase Grubhub's customer count and the customers in many restaurants. After the pandemic hit, apps like Grubhub and Doordash exploded in popularity since everyone was stuck at home. Then, after everyone returned to in-person eating, their customer count declined hugely and they were left in trouble because everyone wanted to have the joy of eating in-person again. This will be a way for Grubhub to get ahead of its rivals like Doordash and Uber Eats and get back up to speed.
