Today, we start off our update with some good news! The deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest has plunged this year, compared to last year. Under Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro's leadership, deforestation increased 10% from July 2021 to July 2022. However, an election took place in late 2022, and president Lula da Silva was inaugurated in January of 2023. Since then, logging has decreased dramatically- 500 square kilometers of land were deforested in July 2023, and 1,487 square kilometers were deforested in July 2022. This is a 66% drop from last year, and Lula aims to keep it that way. Increased surveillance and fines are bringing down the deforestation rates, but more work is needed to bring that rate to zero. This is a great first step though, and hopefully Lula can continue to decrease the logging until it is eliminated.
On another note, the flaming ship that was carrying over 3,000 cars has officially reached a port in the Netherlands, and the fire has been extinguished. The ship had been burning for four days when the fire was finally put out, and authorities rushed to get the ship to port due to incoming bad weather. The area it was in is a very ecologically important site, and the damage caused by a sunken ship could have been immense. It has finally reached the port, and salvage work can now begin on the cars aboard. Sadly, one crew member died in the blaze, but everyone else (and the environment) has come out safe and sound.
