India has just launched another space mission, but it's not to the moon this time. After becoming the first country to ever land a rocket on the moon's south pole, India is now setting their sights on the Sun. Aditya L-1, the rocket, is named after the Sun (Aditya means sun in Sanskrit), and the L-1 will be explained in a moment. After launch, the rocket is now heading into low-Earth orbit, and it will head to Earth-Sun Lagrange Point 1- hence the name, L-1. The point is about 1 million miles (1.61 million kilometers) from Earth, and India's goal is to be able to study the Sun to solve some of its mysteries without interference from eclipses, solar storms, or coronal mass ejections (CMEs). CMEs are large bursts of plasma that the Sun emits in its active areas, called sunspots, and they usually snap back to the Sun because of its magnetic field. However, more powerful ones can sometimes break through the field and are directed at Earth, which is called a solar storm and can knock out satellites for a while. India's other goal will be to study these phenomenons and much more.
On another note, Super Typhoon Saola has arrived in Hong Kong, and it is just exiting the special administrative region of China. The storm brought winds of over 120 mph and heavy rain as well. Since the Hong Kong area is very low-lying, a lot of the city was affected by the storm surge and flooding, and the rain is still affecting the whole region. Hong Kong is one of the world's largest business hubs, and it closed down its entire stock market along with the city on Thursday ahead of Saola. The typhoon will now move onto China's Leizhou Peninsula before hitting the island of Hainan and dissipating.
