41 people have finally been rescued from a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand, India, after two weeks of being stuck. The Silkyara Tunnel, located in northern Uttarakhand, was under construction and was supposed to stretch 2.8 miles through a mountain once finished, but a landslide on November 12 trapped the workers inside the tunnel. After trying to dig through the 197 feet of rock in between them and the workers for 10 days, the drilling machine broke down. It had previously been having some issues, but it broke beyond repair on November 22, just 66 feet away from reaching the workers. They managed to send food and water through a narrow pipe to the workers, but they were at severe risk of falling sick to the terrible conditions. Eventually, the rescuers devised a plan to create a passage made of welded metal pipes through the remaining rock, and they called in workers to dig the rest of the rocks out by hand. After opening up a narrow gap, the workers were carried out on stretchers and met their families and friends for the first time in two weeks. There were no injuries reported, and all 41 men survived. However, incidents like this could become more common as construction increases in the Himalayas, where some mountains may not be able to support these long tunnels going though them. Climate change is also loosening soil and making the area more unstable, which could lead to frequent tunnel collapses as well.
