One person is dead and six others are missing after a yacht collapsed off the coast of Italy's island of Sicily, including British tech billionaire Mike Lynch.
The ship had a large amount of crew from various different countries-- several were from Britain, two were Anglo-French, and there was one member from Sri Lanka and another from Ireland. Along with the passengers, there were 22 people onboard, one of which was British billionaire Mike Lynch. Lynch has founded multiple large companies, including Luminance, a legal AI system; Darktrace, a cyber security company; and Autonomy, a software company-- the latter of which has brought him into a scandal involving the deal that sold Autonomy to tech company Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011 for $11.7 billion. Six people are still missing, which includes Britons, Americans, and Canadians.
The 56-meter yacht, named Bayesian, was traveling through rough waters in the Mediterranean as a strong storm swept across Sicily, churning the ocean and leading to the forming of waterspouts in the area. Strong winds were also prominent, adding to the severity of the storm. The yacht went down at around 5 am local time yesterday near the port of Porticello after being hit by a tornado, according to the local Coast Guard, and the wreckage was later found by divers about 160 feet underwater.
Reports stated that the ship had gone down turbulently, and one woman said that she had heard people screaming as it sank into the ocean. Another man on his boat reported that he had been floating along with the waves but had to turn on his engine to avoid crashing into Bayesian, but he later realized that the yacht had disappeared.
Emergency services from Italy are searching for any other survivors as they look for the six missing people who are yet to be found-- among the missing passengers are Lynch, his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer. However, they will need to be quick, as a human can only tread water for so long. One body, confirmed to be the yacht's chef, was found on the hull of the ship and 15 others have been rescued, including Lynch's wife-- eight of which had to be hospitalized due to their severe condition.
