Idalia has now become a hurricane, and it has the potential to rapidly strengthen into a major hurricane today. Due to extremely warm conditions in the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Idalia could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane with winds up to 120 mph before smashing into the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday. Hurricane warnings and watches have gone up for the west coast of Florida, and storm surge warnings are also in place. Due to the super blue moon tomorrow, the waves will be at their highest and immense flooding is inevitable with this storm. Tropical weather statements are also in place for the east coast of Florida and southern Georgia all the way into Charleston, South Carolina, and tropical storm watches are in place for northeastern Florida. Idalia is currently bringing strong winds and heavy rain to western Cuba, but Florida will receive the brunt of the hit. If you have a beach day planned anytime this week on the east coast of the United States, it is probably not a good idea, due to Idalia in the southeast and Hurricane Franklin whipping up huge waves and rip currents. Franklin is now a Category 4 hurricane with winds of over 150 mph, but it is far from any land. However, it will create some huge waves and strong rip currents on the east coast of the US and around Bermuda, so beach days this week are most likely canceled.
On another note, there is going to be a massive blue moon tomorrow night, so make sure not to miss the spectacle! A blue moon is when a full moon occurs twice in one month, and they only occur every two to three years. There are exceptions, though. In 2018, there were two blue moons in one year, and one of them was a lunar eclipse! A supermoon is when the moon is 90% or closer to its closest point to Earth (known as the perigee), and these happen three to four times a year. According to NASA, about 25% of all full moons are supermoons, but only 3% of all full moons are blue moons. However, a super blue moon is very rare. These happen when the moon is close to its perigee and it is the second full moon in the month, and these take place every 10 years on average. Make sure not to miss this one, because the next one is going to be in January 2037! In 2037, we will see two super blue moons in one year- one in January and one in March!
