Apple is halting all sales of their Series 9 and Ultra 2 watches after a patent dispute over the blood-oxygen sensor. Masimo, a popular medical device producer, has patented the light-based technology that Apple used in the watches to track blood-oxygen levels, and the US International Trade Commission has ruled that Apple is in violation of that patent. Due to this, Apple will halt all online sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 starting on Thursday and retail sales by Christmas Eve. However, watches that have already been purchased are not being recalled. Apple has had previous disputes with Masimo over patents as well, such as two lawsuits in late 2022 when they claimed that Masimo had copied some crucial features and put it into their W1 smartwatch. Apple's sales will be impacted by this violation, but they don't expect it to be too much of a drop and they are trying to get the watches back on the market as fast as possible.
